Over 6,700 GBV Cases in Lagos in 2025, Justice Delivered for 2,460 Survivors

Lagos State recorded 6,753 gender-based violence cases in 2025, with 2,460 survivors securing justice through legal and institutional interventions. Of these, 6,213 victims were female and 540 were male. During the period, 116 offenders were prosecuted and 3,099 survivors received recovery and support services, including counselling, shelters and livelihood programmes. The Domestic Violence Unit continues to lead with mediation, awareness campaigns and emergency response via the 767 Call Service Centre. The ministry rolled out 75,037 preventive actions across urban, rural and riverine communities, targeting schools, religious institutions and vulnerable groups. Major milestones include the completion of a survivor shelter in Agidingbi and the launch of the state’s Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment policy. Lagos remains committed to a zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence and gender-based abuse, partnering with law enforcement, development agencies and community stakeholders to protect all residents.

It's striking that over 6,700 cases were reported, yet only 116 offenders were prosecuted. That gap raises serious doubts about enforcement effectiveness.

Prosecution numbers alone won't solve this crisis; community awareness and prevention strategies need equal attention.

Local support groups and legal aid clinics should coordinate to ensure survivors get timely counseling and legal assistance.
