Ogun State Empowers Women with 3,500 Clean Cooking Stoves and Launches Waste-to-Energy Plan

Ogun State Empowers Women with 3,500 Clean Cooking Stoves and Launches Waste-to-Energy Plan

The Ogun State Government has handed over 3,500 clean cooking stoves to women across the state to mark World Environment Day 2026. This partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment aims to reduce indoor air pollution, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and offer safer cooking options for families. At the celebration in Abeokuta, the Director of the Department of Climate Change highlighted the approval of the National Clean Cooking Policy earlier this year. The policy targets universal access to clean cooking energy for all Nigerian households and institutions by 2030. The governor’s wife welcomed the adoption of Refuse Derived Fuel technology. She noted that converting waste into alternative fuel can ease waste management challenges, reduce landfill pressure, and support cleaner energy generation. The Commissioner for Environment outlined plans to boost climate governance. He called on residents, private organisations, and development partners to collaborate on environmental stewardship and equip young people with skills in waste reduction and biodiversity conservation.

Local cooperatives could help train users on stove operation, coordinate spare parts, and organize community monitoring for better long-term benefits.
