Advocaat: No Shame in 7-1 World Cup Defeat to Germany
Curaçao coach Dick Advocaat insisted there was nothing to be ashamed of after his side were beaten 7-1 by Germany in their 2026 World Cup opener. The match saw Livano Comenencia briefly level before Germany ran away with goals from Schlotterbeck, Havertz (2), Musiala, Brown and Undav. Advocaat, the oldest coach at a World Cup finals at 78, highlighted the financial gulf between the teams. “They are valued at €850 million and we’re worth €25 million,” he said, adding that losing to such a strong side was not embarrassing. He acknowledged the team conceded too many easy goals but stressed his priority now is lifting morale ahead of the next Group E match against Ecuador. “We must make sure no one’s head drops,” he said, confident his players can recover. Despite the heavy defeat, Advocaat praised the “fantastic scenes of happiness” from the ‘Blue Wave’ fans. He reminded everyone of the historic achievement in simply qualifying and said Curaçao should be proud to compete on football’s biggest stage.
