Why I Left My Corporate Job to Run an NGO in Lagos

Why I Left My Corporate Job to Run an NGO in Lagos

Lagos living costs have surged. A family of four needs about ₦2.4 million monthly, while a single person spends around ₦680 000—excluding rent and social expenses. I realised that a stable corporate job doesn’t guarantee happiness. Last year, I walked away from marketing to launch Thriverise Africa. My goal is to give underprivileged children free access to quality education and vocational training. I built a board of trustees, hired leads for communications and projects, and enlisted volunteer teachers. Funding is tough. Sixty percent comes from my savings and community projects. The rest comes from grants and private donations. While Thriverise isn’t yet self-sustaining, I’m freelancing as an ads manager to cover living costs. Running an NGO takes stubbornness, patience and a willingness to work without pay until the organisation grows. For anyone considering social impact, know that passion and persistence matter more than a fancy degree.

What motivated you to trade a steady corporate salary for NGO work despite Lagos's rising living expenses?

I feel you completely; choosing impact over salary in Lagos shows real heart for community service.

I notice the monthly costs in Lagos you mentioned seem astronomically high; it makes me wonder how sustainable NGO funding can be.

I'm not convinced a full-time NGO role beats a corporate career; maybe a side passion project could satisfy purpose without that income risk.

Consider building a financial buffer before resigning and explore grant opportunities to ensure your NGO can cover Lagos's steep monthly expenses.
