FG Unveils Panel Report on Corruption and Torture in Nigerian Prisons
The Federal Government has received an independent panel’s report on allegations of corruption, abuse of power and torture in Nigerian correctional centres. Chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the panel worked for 18 months to investigate misconduct within the Nigerian Correctional Service. Its recommendations will guide reforms aimed at transforming prisons into centres of rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration. The Minister of Interior highlighted a drop in recidivism from 11,616 cases in 2023 to 1,382 in 2025. He also shared that hundreds of inmates now pursue academic and vocational programmes. The government plans to implement the report’s recommendations through robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
