Victor Agali Opens Up on 2004 AFCON Expulsion: ‘We Were Just in the Bar’ — 1 of 4

Former Super Eagles striker Victor Agali has shed new light on his sudden dismissal from Nigeria’s 2004 Africa Cup of Nations squad under coach Christian Chukwu. He, Celestine Babayaro and Yakubu Aiyegbeni were sent home after the opening match for an alleged breach of team rules. Agali insists they had only been relaxing in the hotel bar. He recalls that the late NFF president personally invited him back, but by then he had already changed his ticket. “I don’t have anything to prove to you guys,” he said. I doubt the bar story alone was enough; it feels like na cover-up for whatever really happened off the pitch.

Modern squads can learn from this by establishing transparent codes of conduct and ensuring players understand the consequences before tournaments begin.
