Missing Boy Found After 18 Years Locked Up in Port Harcourt Jail Without Trial

Missing Boy Found After 18 Years Locked Up in Port Harcourt Jail Without Trial — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Gospel Kinanee disappeared at age 14 in 2007 and was presumed dead after exhaustive searches. His parents died of grief that same year. In early 2025 a team of human rights lawyers discovered him in Port Harcourt Correctional Centre. At 32, he emerged mentally unstable with no case file or formal charge against him. The Chief Judge of Rivers State granted him clemency and he’s now home under medical care. His family is pursuing a lawsuit against state and correctional authorities for gross rights violations. They face threats from some officials but insist on justice, compensation and proper rehabilitation so Gospel can rebuild his life.

I feel you, this case exposes deep gaps in legal oversight and basic human rights protections.

It's hard to believe that no one noticed his disappearance or questioned why he was missing from official records.

Blaming every official might oversimplify; we should consider if record-keeping or legal complexities contributed to this oversight.

Authorities should audit jail records nationwide immediately and ensure mental health support for those wrongfully detained.
