Philippines Declares National Energy Emergency Amid Middle East War and Fuel Crisis

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a national energy emergency, warning that the Middle East war threatens the country’s fuel supply and energy stability. The executive order empowers the Department of Energy to secure fuel through advance payments and to crack down on hoarding and profiteering. Transport authorities may introduce fuel subsidies, reduce toll fees, and ease aviation costs to shield citizens from rising prices. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin also approved a temporary increase in coal-fired power generation as liquefied natural gas prices surge. Officials are exploring higher coal imports and new natural gas discoveries near the Malampaya field to stabilise electricity rates.
