Obasanjo Demands “Never Again” to Civil War After Asaba Massacre Documentation

Obasanjo Demands “Never Again” to Civil War After Asaba Massacre Documentation

At his Abeokuta Presidential Library, former President Olusegun Obasanjo received a new book and documentary detailing the Asaba Massacre. The work draws on eyewitness accounts, recorded interviews, archival materials and thorough historical research. As a former military commander during the 1967–1970 war, Obasanjo said he had long avoided speaking about the massacre. He praised the publication as a vital tool for preserving Nigeria’s past and inspiring a better future. He recalled preventing a soldier from raping a woman in Asaba and stressed that such misconduct violates command responsibility. He warned that many of the issues that fueled the civil war still linger today. Echoing General Yakubu Gowon’s view that the country could not survive another conflict, Obasanjo urged all Nigerians to learn from history and work tirelessly to ensure that a second civil war never happens.

I notice the documentary heavily relies on archival footage and interviews, but I wonder if it fully addresses all conflicting accounts.

Interesting call for 'never again,' but isn't it easier said than done when ethnic tensions still simmer beneath the surface?

Highlighting those eyewitness testimonies matters, but we should also support community education programs so future generations grasp this history.
