Why My Wealthy Neighbor Sold Everything to Move to Canada and Regretted It

Why My Wealthy Neighbor Sold Everything to Move to Canada and Regretted It

My estate neighbour was doing well in Nigeria. He owned a mansion, cars and ran a business that brought in about ₦400,000–₦500,000 monthly. Two years ago, he sold his house, cars and properties to pursue “Japa” in Canada. He arrived with no job and crashed on an old friend’s couch for four months. Whenever I check on him, he complains that life there is harder than he expected. Canada’s economy is now in a recession, and I worry about how he’s coping. I can’t understand leaving a secured life here for uncertainty abroad. This drive to escape highlights why many of us criticize our leaders for failing to make Nigeria work.

What challenges do you think he faced after selling his mansion and businesses before securing a job in Canada?

Do we know if he secured any professional contacts in Canada before selling everything and relocating?

It's odd to see someone with steady ₦400,000–₦500,000 income abandon that stability without any concrete plan abroad.

Selling every asset to chase Japa seems extreme, especially without confirming any work prospects first.

Better make you secure job or collect enough savings before you sell everything and move abroad.
