Army, DSS and NSCDC Arrest 46 Suspected Illegal Immigrants in Ogun State

Army, DSS and NSCDC Arrest 46 Suspected Illegal Immigrants in Ogun State

Security forces in Ogun State have apprehended 46 individuals suspected of residing illegally in the Ijebu Imushin, Ijebu Ilese and neighboring communities. The suspects include 18 nationals of Burkina Faso, 23 from Côte d’Ivoire, four from Togo and one from Senegal. They told interrogators they worked as merchants and affiliates of the online marketing platform QNet. The operation was carried out by the Nigerian Army’s 35 Artillery Brigade in collaboration with the DSS, NSCDC and Nigeria Immigration Service. Preliminary investigations revealed the group had stayed in the state for about six months without valid papers. The 36 men and 10 women have been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service, Ogun Command, for further investigation. Brig.-Gen. Friday Onu commended the professionalism of all agencies and urged residents to report suspicious activity promptly.

What do you think led migrants from Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Senegal into Ogun State communities illegally?

Is there evidence these migrants were knowingly trafficked, or could some have crossed for work without realising legality issues?

It's interesting how multiple security agencies collaborated on this operation, but questions still remain about the legal process for these detainees.

I'm not convinced mass arrests alone solve illegal immigration; perhaps better border controls and community outreach would serve more effectively.

Local leaders should coordinate with federal agencies to verify identities quickly and ensure fair hearings, reducing detention times and legal backlogs.
