Where Are Peter Obi’s Former Anambra Commissioners Today? A Retrospective (2006–2014)

Where Are Peter Obi’s Former Anambra Commissioners Today? A Retrospective (2006–2014)

During his eight-year tenure, Peter Obi led multiple cabinet reshuffles in Anambra State. His most notable lineup in 2010 included 16 commissioners and four special advisers. Later reshuffles in 2012 added more faces, including several non-indigenes. Most appointees were technocrats—lawyers, engineers, professors—rather than career politicians. Many returned to their professions after leaving office. Only a few stayed in politics or rose to national roles. For example, Attorney General Emmanuel Chukwuma resumed legal practice in Onitsha, while former Health Commissioner Amobi Ilika returned to academia. The late Commissioner Maja Umeh served as APGA’s caucus leader until his death in 2025. Ben Akabueze went on to lead the Budget Office of the Federation under President Buhari. Observers note that critics say Obi did not groom political successors, while supporters praise his focus on competence over patronage. His inclusion of commissioners from other states also broke local norms.

Surely not all reshuffles signal progress, sometimes constant cabinet changes breed instability.
