Undav’s Late Brace Sparks Germany’s Dramatic 2-1 Win Over Côte d’Ivoire

Undav’s Late Brace Sparks Germany’s Dramatic 2-1 Win Over Côte d’Ivoire

Germany overturned a 1-0 deficit to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 at BMO Field, Toronto. Substitute Deniz Undav scored in the 68th minute and again deep in stoppage time to complete the comeback. Franck Kessié had put Ivory Coast ahead in the 30th minute against the run of play. Germany dominated early but struggled to find the net until making tactical changes after halftime. A triple substitution on the hour brought on Undav, who first levelled with a close-range finish and then drilled home a stoppage-time winner. The result secures Germany’s place in the knockout round of World Cup qualifying.

I'm not convinced Undav can replicate this impact regularly against stronger opponents than Ivory Coast.

It's overstating to call this a dramatic triumph when Germany only broke through late against a fatigued side.

Coaches might want to plan for fresh legs in the final minutes, given how impactful Undav's late arrivals proved.
