FCCPC Denies Tinubu Approved Nine New Airtime Credit Operators
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has denied reports that President Tinubu approved nine new firms to enter Nigeria’s airtime credit market. Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, said the commission was neither aware of nor involved in the claims attributed to it. He confirmed that the regulatory framework remains suspended under a court order. An interim injunction by the Federal High Court in Lagos halted enforcement of the DEON Consumer Lending Regulations 2025. Companies named in the disputed reports include Technotrends Platforms, Total Tim Nigeria, Fonyou Technologies and others. The Wireless Application Service Providers Association (WASPA) also challenged any approvals under the halted regulations. The substantive case is scheduled for further hearing on July 20, 2026. The Presidency has not yet commented on the matter.
