FG Issues Ultimatum to MTN, Airtel and Glo Over Network Quality
The Federal Government has warned major telecom operators to improve network performance or face regulatory sanctions. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy noted that recent reforms have stabilised the sector and eliminated excuses for poor service. Long-term measures include the World Bank-backed Project BRIDGE to roll out open-access fibre and new towers before year-end, alongside expanded satellite capacity. Immediate actions such as tariff adjustments, tax harmonisation and declaring telecoms as critical national infrastructure have restored operator profitability. With these reforms in place, MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and 9mobile must now address service gaps. The Nigerian Communications Commission is empowered to monitor performance and enforce standards, with penalties looming for non-compliance.
