Kano Court Sentences Man to 7 Years for Advertising Cannabis Online

Kano Court Sentences Man to 7 Years for Advertising Cannabis Online

The NDLEA Kano Command has won a conviction against a 28-year-old man who promoted cannabis for sale on social media. Operatives arrested him on April 22 after a video circulated showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa. On July 14, the Federal High Court 1 in Kano sentenced him to seven years in prison without an option of fine. The agency calls this a landmark judgment and a strong deterrent against illicit drug trade on public platforms. NDLEA officials urge families, community leaders and social media platforms to remain vigilant in the fight against substance abuse. They also invite anyone with relevant information to come forward and support ongoing enforcement efforts.

Did anyone expect this seven-year sentence for online cannabis ads to serve as a real deterrent, or is it too harsh for a single video?

For real, this sentence is eye-popping, but maybe people go think twice before posting such ads.

Advertising cannabis online sounds risky, but social media has become the main marketplace for many unconventional products these days.

I'm not convinced a lengthy jail term for promoting a plant on video will actually reduce crime or curb public demand.

Law enforcement should focus on educational campaigns and community outreach alongside prosecutions to address underlying causes of online drug promotion.
