Niger’s Military Government Criminalises Same-Sex Relationships with Jail Terms Up to 20 Years

Niger’s new penal code, enacted under the military government, criminalises same-sex relationships for the first time. Under the reform, engaging in same-sex relations carries a prison term of five to ten years and a fine. Entering a same-sex marriage can result in ten to twenty years behind bars. Anyone who manages or participates in clubs, organisations or associations for LGBTQIA+ people faces the same penalties. The reform was initiated under former President Mohamed Bazoum and finalised after the July 2023 coup.
