Federal Government Launches New Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Programme for Ex-Terrorists
The Federal Government has introduced a new set of Standard Operating Procedures for disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) of former terrorists and individuals involved in armed violence. Unveiled at a National Validation Workshop in Abuja, the framework will guide implementation at the federal level and in pilot states Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara. It defines clear roles for ministries, security agencies and civil institutions to coordinate efforts, ensure transparency and prevent duplication. Developed through extensive consultations with security and civilian stakeholders, the guidelines draw on national experiences and international best practices. The pilot phase will test the procedures’ effectiveness before wider rollout, aiming to foster lasting peace and reduce the risk of renewed violence.
