Why You Must Honour Your Mother Even If They Call Her a Witch

I once spoke with a fellow Urhobo man who believed his life was cursed because everyone said his mother was a witch. He hated her and even wished she would die. I laughed and told him that no matter who she is—even if she were Satan—she is still your mother. You must honour her. If she wanted you dead, you wouldn’t be here today. What if she isn’t really a witch but just the victim of gossip? If someone truly threatens your life, pray and protect yourself. But never mistreat or wish death on your mother. Even God won’t forgive that. No mother takes pride in her child’s suffering. Remember: Mama na mama.

It seems odd to demand honour when someone suspects their mother cast curses; respect must be earned.

I get loyalty, but should we still honour a mother whose alleged witchcraft might have ruined her child's well-being?

A simple step might be setting healthy boundaries while offering basic care to your mother, regardless of past accusations.
