Verifying the African Union Youth Council’s Authority: A Civic Reflection
Recently, promotional materials for the African Union Youth Council claimed it was mandated and funded by the African Union Commission. Curious, I searched public AU documents and found no official listing of AUYC among the Commission’s bodies. I contacted an AUYC official, who made bold claims about offices in Addis Ababa and monthly Commission funding. Yet its own adverts call it the “African Union Youth Club,” coordinated by a regional office, not by the Commission itself. No public letter or webpage confirms the major assertions. My follow-up requests for proof were deflected, and the organisation’s story shifted. To settle the question, I’ve reached out directly to credible contacts at the AU Secretariat and will share any response. Until the Commission issues a clear statement, anyone considering joining, sponsoring, or funding AUYC should pause and ask for verifiable evidence.
