Adoke Warns Over-Litigation of Elections Is Eroding Nigeria’s Democracy
Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual law week in Abuja, the former Attorney-General highlighted how an over-reliance on courts to decide electoral disputes is weakening voter power. He referenced former President Jonathan’s call for the ballot paper, not the bench, to determine winners. Adoke argued that “judicialisation” of elections risks undermining public confidence and electoral legitimacy. He also criticised political parties for high nomination fees and the trend toward “coronation” of candidates by consensus, warning that internal democracy must be protected. Adoke urged INEC to rebuild trust by remaining visibly independent and called on Nigerians to reject ethnic, religious or financial inducements when casting their votes.
