Edo Governor Launches ₦1bn Interest-Free Loan Scheme for Traders and Artisans on Workers’ Day

Edo Governor Launches ₦1bn Interest-Free Loan Scheme for Traders and Artisans on Workers’ Day

Governor Monday Okpebholo has unveiled a ₦1 billion interest-free loan scheme to support traders, artisans and entrepreneurs across Edo State. He made the announcement during the Workers’ Day celebration at Benin’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, stood in for him. The governor said this initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to worker welfare and economic growth. Okpebholo also highlighted prompt payment of salaries, a 13th month bonus and a new minimum wage of ₦75,000. He has set up a high-powered committee to review the state’s contributory pension scheme and advise on next steps. At the same event, a factional chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress called on the government to exempt pre-2017 workers from the contributory pension scheme, arguing that the current system imposes hardship on retirees.

How exactly will small traders prove eligibility and receive their share of the loan quickly?

It's a welcome idea, but I worry about complex application requirements and whether smaller artisans will actually access the funds.

On paper, this looks solid, but previous schemes too dey choke under bureaucratic delays before actual support arrives.

I doubt this scheme will truly reach grassroots artisans who lack the paperwork or political connections needed to apply.

Local cooperatives could help artisans gather documentation and navigate application steps more efficiently for this loan scheme.
