Kwara State Sues Bukola Saraki for Defamation, Seeks Bench Warrant
The Kwara State Government has filed a criminal defamation suit against former Senate President Bukola Saraki. The case, brought before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin by the state Attorney General and Justice Ministry officials, alleges that Saraki circulated false claims on 17 April 2026 suggesting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq did not complete secondary school. Prosecution counsel R.O. Balogun urged the court to issue a bench warrant after Saraki failed to appear despite being duly served. The state argues the publication was malicious and capable of undermining public peace and the government’s reputation. Saraki’s lawyer, Jimoh Mumini, challenged both the court’s jurisdiction and the validity of service, insisting the matter belongs in a Federal High Court. Justice M.O. Folorunso granted an adjournment and fixed 3 July 2026 for preliminary objections and possible arraignment. This suit intensifies the ongoing legal and political rivalry between the AbdulRazaq administration and Saraki’s camp, following an earlier 20-count charge linked to the 2018 Offa robbery investigation.
