NSA Detains NFSS Commander-General and Six Officials in Abuja

NSA Detains NFSS Commander-General and Six Officials in Abuja

The Office of the National Security Adviser has arrested Dr Osatimehin Joshua Wole, Commander-General of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, along with six other officials in Abuja. Those detained include L.E. Okonkwo, retired Majors Abubakar Muhammed and Sunday Akpa, Usman Muazu Abdullahi, Peter Jov and Reuben Kuku. No official reasons for the detentions have been disclosed, and neither the NSA nor the Forest Security Service has issued a statement. President Tinubu approved an armed forest guard unit in May 2025 to tackle banditry and kidnapping in forested areas. Dr Osatimehin has urged swift presidential assent to the NFSS bill, and the Senate backed the measure while condemning recent herdsmen attacks and the abduction of a Kogi monarch. Security experts warn that Nigeria’s forests are increasingly used as criminal hideouts. The latest arrests raise questions about accountability and the future of the new forest security agency.

What do you think prompted the NSA to detain top NFSS officials, including Dr Wole and others in Abuja?

The timing of these arrests seems odd given recent security announcements from the presidency.
