EFCC Secures Two-Year Jail Term for Truck Driver Carrying 25 Tons of Lithium in Kwara
A 50-year-old truck driver, Kasimu Bawa, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Ilorin for unlawful possession of 25 tons of lithium-bearing mineral. EFCC operatives arrested him on September 9, 2022, in Edu Local Government Area, Kwara State, after intercepting a DAF truck loaded with lepidolite valued at about ₦2.4 million. Laboratory tests by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency confirmed the minerals contained lithium. After hearing testimonies from two prosecution and two defense witnesses, Justice Abimbola Awogboro convicted Bawa. He was given an option of a ₦5 million fine, and the truck and minerals were forfeited to the Federal Government. Bawa had been driving the truck on behalf of a Chinese national previously convicted for illegally purchasing the minerals without a licence.
