Lagos Moves to Generate Its Own Power, Secures 400MW Amid Grid Failures
Lagos State is taking charge of its electricity supply by generating and distributing 400 megawatts locally. This move aims to ease reliance on Nigeria’s often unreliable national grid and support public facilities over the next three years. Under the new Electricity Act 2023, states can run their own power markets and Lagos has led the way. The state set up its own regulator in 2025 and has already partnered with Fenchurch Power, Mainland Power, and Viathan Engineering to deliver electricity directly to consumers. Officials say a pay-for-delivery model will improve transparency and cut waste by charging only for power actually received. Experts caution that clear coordination with the federal regulator will be crucial for smooth pricing and standardisation across states.
