The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency announced it secured 974 convictions of drug offenders across Nigeria between January and March 2026. Of these, 899 were men and 75 were women, with 265 convictions in January, 316 in February, and 393 in March. Eleven top traffickers received a combined 254 years behind bars. Notable sentences include 42-year-old Adegbite Solomon’s 130-year term and Ridwan Animashaun’s 25-year term, along with several others receiving between 15 and 17 years. Courts also ordered asset forfeitures, pharmacy license revocations, and seizure of bank accounts. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) described the convictions as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs. He praised officers for their bravery and urged citizens to stay vigilant, noting that swift justice is the strongest deterrent.

Those figures look impressive, but I wonder if they reflect real change or just more people filling prisons.

Focusing on sentencing years doesn't solve root issues of addiction and poverty driving the trade in Nigeria.

More community outreach and support programs could reduce drug use before arrests. Make we prioritize rehab over jail time.
