Baale Demands ₦20 Million Bribe to Build on Our Land

Baale Demands ₦20 Million Bribe to Build on Our Land — 1 of 3
1 / 3

I bought a piece of land and paid in full. We have all the papers and planned to build four simple rooms. But the Baale’s men came at 2 am, stopped the work and sent for my husband. He demanded ₦20 million before we could continue. My husband pleaded with everyone he knows. The Baale refused to accept ₦20 million or even ₦10 million. We had to move our wood and cement to safety. My husband hasn’t slept and is deeply distressed. This leader was supposed to protect his people. Instead, he uses his position to extort. We offered ₦2.5 million and later ₦5 million, but he still refused. Two families before us lost their land entirely. I watched my husband cry and his blood pressure skyrocket. Lord, you hold the hearts of kings—please spare my husband from this cruelty. Show mercy to the powerless and rescue us from this injustice.

Funny how this kind of extortion seems routine, yet I agree it's utterly wrong. I refused and challenged it.

It's common for local chiefs to enforce arbitrary fees at night with threats, but demanding ₦20 million seems unusually steep even for land disputes.

Are we certain every required approval was obtained before purchase? Village chiefs often expect family consent too, not just written land documents.

Consider hiring a property lawyer to verify your title and filing an injunction. Also involve respected community leaders to mediate the dispute.
