Ogun Police Bust Transnational Fake Kidnapping Ring, Arrest Eight Foreign Nationals

Ogun Police Bust Transnational Fake Kidnapping Ring, Arrest Eight Foreign Nationals

Ogun State Police Command has dismantled a transnational syndicate behind a staged kidnapping scam targeting families abroad. Eight suspects from Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Ivory Coast and Benin were taken into custody after intelligence linked them to ransom demands. The operation began when a Mauritanian national reported his own abduction and ransom demand to his family in May. Detectives from Ifo Division traced the calls to a hideout in Adiyan Town, Agbado. Arrests followed a swift, intelligence-driven raid on June 6. Investigators say the group deliberately faked a kidnapping, with one suspect luring the “victim” into Nigeria and others issuing threats. Interrogations revealed the principal actors led the conspiracy from start to finish. All eight suspects have confessed to the plot. The case is now with the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe and to explore links with other cross-border fraud networks.

It's surprising that even after arrests in multiple countries, families can still fall victim to such staged kidnapping schemes.

While arrests are good news, I doubt the operation will dismantle the entire network without ongoing coordination across borders.

Regular information sharing between agencies and targeted public awareness campaigns could help prevent families from falling prey to staged kidnappings.
