Advice Needed: Should I Fire My Friend Who’s Underperforming at Work?

Good evening everyone. I manage a college and hired a close friend as Academic Coordinator last January. Since day one, he has struggled to deliver even four simple slides a week despite reminders and encouragement. My predecessor advised me to let him go, but I hoped I could help him improve. I have spoken, pleaded, and even raised my voice—nothing has changed. His poor performance is affecting operations and my reputation. I feel guilty about taking away his livelihood, but I’m running out of patience. I spoke to a couple of strangers today for suggestions: one recommended a formal review meeting, the other offered no real solution. What would you advise?

Have you considered what your friend's strengths could be used for instead of firing them outright?

Haha, you're onto something! Maybe your friend's superpower dey hidden in another role, worth a try.

You might be surprised: redirecting their energy into tasks they enjoy can boost productivity more than cutting ties.

It seems like weekly slide deliverables were clearly defined, yet reminders and encouragement haven't improved his output.

Your loyalty might cloud judgment; friend or not, results matter in a leadership role.

Set a clear performance improvement plan with measurable targets and review dates to fairly assess whether he can meet expectations.
