Why Nigeria’s Secret Coup Trial Threatens Our Democracy
I grew up under Nigeria’s military dictatorships and reject any nostalgia for the barracks. I believe in fixing our flawed democracy through elections, civic action and protest. Reports of a coup plot last year unsettled me. The Defence Headquarters first denied those claims as false and malicious. By January, it admitted plans to overthrow the Tinubu government. Six officers now face military tribunals on treason and terrorism charges. No civilian administration has ever tried soldiers for an alleged coup. This unprecedented move raises deep legal and political questions. Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana argues that such charges should be heard in open civilian courts. He warns that secret trials and a two-track justice system will erode public trust. This case is a fundamental test for our democracy. A transparent, evidence-based trial will either reinforce confidence in our institutions or deepen cynicism. Nigerians deserve an open process and clear accountability.
