Transport Coalitions Push for Formal HDHTAN Taskforce to Curb Illegal Checkpoints
The Coalition of Agricultural Producers, Market Traders, Haulage and Interstate Transport Associations of Nigeria (CAPMHTAN) has called on the Federal Government to formally inaugurate the Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria (HDHTAN) Federal Taskforce as a nationally recognised inter-agency platform. The group warned that illegal checkpoints, multiple taxation and extortion on federal highways are driving up transport costs and fuelling inflation. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, representatives of 12 national transport, haulage and agricultural produce associations thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and federal agencies for recent reforms. They commended the establishment of the taskforce for dismantling unauthorised checkpoints, gathering actionable intelligence and supporting the free movement of goods. Despite these gains, the coalition highlighted ongoing challenges including unlawful levies by state actors, vehicle seizures, kidnapping of drivers, cargo theft and vandalism. They expressed concern over inconsistent implementation of Presidential Order No. 001 across some states and resistance to the taskforce’s activities. To address these issues, CAPMHTAN presented a five-point demand: a formal inauguration of the taskforce with a clear legal mandate, an official letter of introduction to all relevant bodies, recognition as the principal partner of the Joint Revenue Board, a presidential directive for state cooperation, and stronger collaboration with federal security and transport agencies.
