Lagos Bars Petroleum Tankers from Hauling Cooking Oil over Health Risks
Lagos State has prohibited the use of petroleum tankers to transport edible oil in a bid to strengthen food safety and protect consumers. The move follows a memorandum of understanding between the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, NAFDAC and key players in the edible oil and haulage sectors. Investigations uncovered cases where tankers once used for petroleum were being reused for cooking oil without proper cleaning. Regulators warned that residual petroleum in those tankers could contaminate oil and pose serious health risks. Only dedicated, certified tankers will now be allowed to carry edible oil within the state, and violators face strict sanctions. NAFDAC also announced new measures for stricter monitoring, improved traceability and clear identification of approved tankers to ensure safe transport of food products.
