Beyond Solar and Wind: Dr. Abdullahi’s Push for Hydrogen Power in Nigeria
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, is leading efforts to make hydrogen a key part of Nigeria’s renewable energy future. Under his guidance, the Commission is driving research, policy development, and partnerships to harness low-carbon hydrogen alongside solar and wind. Hydrogen produced from renewable sources can help decarbonise industries, strengthen energy security, and diversify Nigeria’s energy mix. Initiatives like the Presidential Committee on the National Hydrogen Policy and the 2023 approval of the National Energy Master Plan have given hydrogen a formal role in Nigeria’s strategy. Looking ahead, the Energy Commission is working with private sector players and international partners to build infrastructure, develop skills, and attract investment. With abundant solar resources and a clear policy framework, hydrogen could become a game changer for Nigeria’s economic growth and industrialisation.
