Peter Obi’s Call for Kanu’s Release Sparks Rebuke from Soludo’s Aide

Peter Obi’s Call for Kanu’s Release Sparks Rebuke from Soludo’s Aide

Peter Obi recently told Nigerians in Washington, D.C. that there was no justification for the continued detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. A video of his remarks has since gone viral online. Ejimofor Opara, special adviser on media to Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, condemned Obi’s comments. He said Peter Obi should apologise to both the Nigerian judiciary and the Finnish courts, where Kanu’s protégé Simon Ekpa received a six-year sentence for terrorism offences. Opara reminded Nigerians that Obi’s own political career benefited from court rulings. He argued Obi’s stance was “careless and self-serving” and warned that pandering to terrorists would hurt his election chances. For context, a Finnish court jailed Simon Ekpa in 2025 for promoting Biafra independence by illegal means. Later that year, a Nigerian court sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism-related charges.

Why do you think Peter Obi feels Kanu's detention in the US context is unjustified, despite Soludo's adviser condemning that stance?

I agree, his concern feels valid since everyone deserves fair treatment, even in foreign jurisdictions.

It's interesting how a viral clip can shift public focus from policy debates to personal loyalties in Nigerian politics.

Calling for an immediate release overlooks due process and legal standards that might justify Kanu's continued detention under existing Nigerian law.

Make una ask Soludo's team to publish legal documents backing Kanu's detention so Nigerians can judge for themselves.
