Inside Surviving Biafra: A Documentary on Nigeria’s Civil War Survivors
“Surviving Biafra: Voices from the Nigerian Civil War” is a powerful new documentary that brings first-hand testimonies of civilians, Biafran civil defence members, and Nigerian army commandos to the screen. Directed by Leke Alabi-Isama and Meji Alabi, the film uncovers the human cost of the 1967–1970 conflict through rare archival footage and personal stories. Anchored by an intergenerational partnership, the filmmakers—son and grandson of Brigadier General Godwin Alabi Isama—draw on thousands of family photos and memoirs to weave a balanced, multi-perspective narrative. Survivors from both sides share memories of loss, resilience, and unexpected acts of compassion during one of Africa’s most devastating wars. Premiered at the University of Lagos in June 2026, the screening brought together veterans, filmmakers, and students for an emotional panel discussion. A symbolic reunion between two former adversaries underscored the film’s central message: the urgency of memory and the power of reconciliation. By speaking directly to a younger generation that never lived through the war, the documentary issues a vital warning against tribal hatred and the drums of secession. It challenges viewers to choose dialogue over conflict and to carry forward lessons of unity and peace.
