From Chibok to Oya: Why Tinubu's Government Botched the Kidnapping Response

I recall the Chibok abduction under GEJ and how the government’s weak response destroyed its reputation. Media outrage and poor strategy allowed the opposition to capitalise on the crisis. Now in 2026, similar kidnappings have struck under President Tinubu. Yet politics seems to have overshadowed governance, leading to delayed action and disjointed security efforts. I voted for this administration but have watched insecurity worsen. Our government must protect citizens and address the real issues affecting households, not just pursue political ambitions. To turn things around, I believe the president should set clear deadlines for security agencies and hold them accountable. He must also ease the burden of rising living costs through tangible measures while planning for long-term solutions. What else would you add?

How can both administrations avoid repeating the same mistakes in handling mass abductions and regain public trust?

Absolutely, strengthening local intelligence channels and clear accountability will help restore trust and prevent repeats.

It's telling that media outrage emerges only when political rivals exist, not necessarily when citizens remain at risk.

We can't blame Tinubu's government entirely without examining deeper security infrastructure failures spanning multiple administrations.

Officials should establish clear communication channels with local communities and deploy rapid response units adjacent to high-risk areas.
