FG Launches Nutrition-Focused Procurement Guidelines for Healthier Public Meals

FG Launches Nutrition-Focused Procurement Guidelines for Healthier Public Meals

Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s new National Guidelines for Public Procurement of Food and Related Services. Launched in July 2026, the policy sets uniform nutrition standards for meals served in schools, hospitals, correctional facilities, NYSC camps, IDP camps and other public institutions. The Guidelines restrict sugar-sweetened and non-sugar-sweetened beverages, limit sodium, saturated fats and trans fats, and promote fruits, vegetables and whole grains. They ban partially hydrogenated oils, require clear labeling of trans-fat content, and encourage retail outlets on public property to highlight healthier options. A key measure mandates that at least 30 per cent of institutional food procurement budgets go to locally grown or produced foods from smallholder farmers. Maximum sodium thresholds and meal-specific limits aim to align public meals with national dietary goals. CAPPA urges the Bureau of Public Procurement to establish the National Food Procurement Oversight Committee and for all levels of government to train procurement officers, monitor compliance and publicly report implementation. Faithful application of these standards is essential to deliver healthier meals to millions of Nigerians.

Absolutely, these guidelines should drive more consistent, nutritious school meals and improve students' health over time.

It's interesting CAPPA praised these guidelines, but uniform standards won't guarantee better meals without proper monitoring and funding.

Uniform nutrition rules risk sidelining traditional recipes that communities rely on, potentially causing backlash in school and hospital settings.

States should set up regular audits and training workshops for cafeteria staff to ensure these nutrition guidelines are actually followed.
