Tyla Makes History with Two AMA Wins: Best Afrobeats Artist and Social Song

Tyla Makes History with Two AMA Wins: Best Afrobeats Artist and Social Song

For her third AMA appearance, Tyla stunned in a custom Valentino Garavani design under the “Costume Art” theme. The ensemble featured a diamond chain bodice and a vivid turquoise skirt. On 25 May 2026, the South African singer won Best Afrobeats Artist for the second year running. She also became the first international act to claim Social Song of the Year with “Chanel,” surpassing global stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Moliy, and Rema. Tyla’s wins reflect her devoted fanbase, the Tygers, and her track has over 354 million Spotify streams. She is also the first African artist to score multiple Top 10 hits on the Spotify Global chart. The 52nd American Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and were hosted by Queen Latifah. Although Tyla did not attend in person, she now stands as the most nominated African artist in AMA history.

The custom Valentino looks impressive, yet it feels more like a fashion stunt than recognition of her musical evolution.

Winning twice sounds solid, but awards often circle the same stars instead of highlighting fresh talent.

Tyla's AMA success shows the power of blending style and substance. Emerging Afrobeats artists should invest in strong visual branding.
