Turning African Research into Industry: Dr. Dahiru’s Vision for Innovation

At the 2nd International Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation in Abuja, Dr. Muhammed Dahiru of Nigeria’s PICTT argued that Africa’s main tech challenge isn’t a lack of ideas but converting research into products. He noted that the continent contributes just 2 percent of global patent applications despite its young population, resources and talent. Closing this gap requires strong policy, institutional support and commercial pathways. Dr. Dahiru urged universities, businesses, investors and government to build innovation ecosystems that link labs to markets. Individuals also play a role, he added. “We should not wait for government to do everything,” he said, calling for active participation in developing technologies and entrepreneurship.
