From Rubbish to Revival: OGWAMA’s Push for a Cleaner Ogun State
OGWAMA has launched a structured waste management overhaul under the leadership of Alhaji Farouk Akintunde. The agency’s teams are clearing long-standing refuse backlogs on major highways and inner-city roads, restoring sanitation in Abeokuta and neighbouring areas. A zero-tolerance enforcement drive against illegal dumping now includes arrests and fines. At the same time, the Blue Box Initiative encourages households to separate recyclables from general waste, easing landfill pressure and boosting recycling jobs. Partnerships with private recyclers and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta aim to introduce data-driven solutions. Internally, OGWAMA has upgraded over ten waste trucks, settled outstanding payments to operators, and improved staff welfare to ensure reliable service. These combined efforts mark a turning point for waste management in Ogun State. A focus on enforcement, community engagement, and infrastructure investment is driving progress toward a more sustainable and clean environment.
