Rivers State Suspends School after Two-Year-Old Girl’s Death
The Rivers State Government has suspended Wisdom Gate International School in Eligbolo, Obio/Akpor LGA after a two-year-old girl died when a poorly mounted bookshelf fell on her in the classroom on March 17, 2026. The toddler, Wynne Akekue, was asleep when the shelf collapsed. Her parents, Dr Iasuaka Akekue and Mrs Chinyerum Akekue, have accused the school of negligence and an attempted cover-up. They are demanding justice for their daughter. On April 16, the State Commissioner for Education announced that an independent investigation confirmed serious lapses. The school will remain closed until all issues are resolved. The Ministry emphasised its commitment to student safety and quality assurance in approved schools.
