June 12 Remembered: MKO Abiola and Nigeria’s Journey to Democracy
June 12 has become a symbol of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy. It marks the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely praised as the freest vote in our history before it was annulled by the military government. Before this landmark poll, Nigeria spent decades under military rule. Under General Babangida’s transition program, two parties—the Social Democratic Party and the National Republican Convention—contested the presidency as Nigerians clamored for civilian rule. The main candidates were MKO Abiola, a philanthropist committed to national unity and economic growth, and Bashir Tofa, the establishment’s preferred choice. Abiola’s broad support across ethnic and religious lines made the vote historic. Its annulment transformed June 12 into Democracy Day, honoring those who sacrificed for our right to choose.
