Uganda’s Military Chief Pledges to Back Israel if Conflict with Iran Escalates
Uganda’s top general announced on social media that his country stands ready to join Israel if hostilities with Iran worsen. He urged a swift end to the fighting but warned that any move to destroy Israel could bring Ugandan forces into the war. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba cited deep historical ties and Israel’s past support for Uganda. He invoked the memory of Yonatan Netanyahu, who died leading the 1976 Entebbe rescue, and said he plans to erect a statue in his honour. In a later-deleted post, the general claimed the Ugandan army could seize Tehran in 72 hours, lamenting that “they never listen to a black man.” Uganda’s defence force has around 40,000 personnel, some fighter jets and attack helicopters, but analysts doubt it could tip the balance in a conflict with Iran. Despite questions about its military reach, Uganda’s leadership and Israel maintain strong relations, often marked by high-level visits and commemorations of past cooperation.
