Kano State’s “Auren Gata” Mass Wedding Now Open to Muslims and Christians

Kano State’s mass wedding programme, now called “Auren Gata” (Marriage for the Privileged), is open to Muslims and Christians interested in tying the knot. Officials say widows, widowers, divorcees, spinsters and bachelors can apply after meeting basic eligibility criteria. The state government has allocated N1.5 billion for 1,500 couples. Each groom will receive N100,000 for dowry and basic household items, while each bride will get N100,000 to start a business. Participants must pass health screenings, including HIV and genotype tests. Authorities aim to strengthen families, curb immorality and support underprivileged households. Stakeholders believe the counselling, empowerment and public support will reduce poverty-driven delays in marriage and help lower divorce rates.
