Eastern Libya Bans Entry to Nationals of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia

Eastern Libya Bans Entry to Nationals of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia

Libya’s eastern administration in Benghazi has issued a decree barring citizens of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia from entering through land borders, airports or seaports. The move, led by Prime Minister Osama Hamad and allied with military commander Khalifa Haftar, is intended to strengthen border controls and migration management. Exemptions apply to accredited diplomats, consular staff and their immediate families. Professionals in key sectors such as education, healthcare and medical services may also enter if they hold valid contracts and obtain government approval. Libya remains divided between this eastern government and the UN-recognized administration in Tripoli. As one of the main transit routes for migrants heading to Europe, the country hosts more than 900,000 migrants. Observers say the ban could alter migration patterns across North Africa, although no end date has been set.

Why would Libya's eastern administration single out these nationalities, and what might this mean for regional security and migration?

I share your concern. Barring those nationalities seems arbitrary and may fuel new security and migration challenges.

It seems odd that a decree like this is issued amid an ongoing power struggle, yet there's little mention of its humanitarian consequences.

While security concerns are real, banning entire populations might backfire and fuel more resentment against Libya's authorities.

International agencies should monitor border enforcement closely and offer legal support to affected migrants to prevent rights abuses on the fringes.
