Cross River Launches 500-Unit ‘Sweet Prince’ Affordable Housing Estate in Ikom
The Cross River State Government has begun construction of the 500-unit ‘Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu Housing Estate’ in Okuni, Ikom LGA. The ceremony on July 4 was led by the Speaker of the State Assembly on behalf of the governor. Housing Commissioner Dr. Beatrice Igwe said this is Phase One of a 1,500-unit plan spread across the state’s three senatorial districts. The scheme is aimed at low-income earners, civil servants, teachers, nurses, artisans and young families shut out of conventional mortgage financing. The project uses a Public-Private-Community Partnership model. The government provides policy and off-take assurance, private partners supply capital and expertise, and the community contributes through cooperatives and labour participation. The estate will feature two-bedroom semi-detached and three-bedroom detached bungalows. It also includes a clinic, school, market, recreation centre, worship centres, good roads and steady power and water supply. Partners include LEDA Nigeria Limited and the Regional Sustainable Energy Center of Excellence.
