PSN Warns: State Officials Enabling Illegal Drug Shops in Cross River and Akwa Ibom
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has raised alarm over a rise in unlicensed drug outlets, accusing some state officials of bypassing the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Act 2022 and the Fake Drug Act. PSN President Ayuba Ibrahim Tanko highlighted cases in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, where unauthorized individuals have assumed regulatory roles. He also praised recent Federal High Court judgments in Ibadan and Calabar against illegal pharmaceutical operators as important victories against quackery and unsafe medicine distribution. Pointing out that fewer than 50,000 of Nigeria’s estimated three million pharmaceutical outlets are formally registered, the society called on the National Assembly to toughen penalties and boost enforcement. Do you think Nigeria needs stricter sanctions and better regulation to curb fake drugs?
