When Survival Trumps Justice: Why Nigerians Now Admire Their Oppressors
One of Nigeria’s most painful truths is citizens defending the very systems that oppress them. Decades of hardship and institutional failure have turned survival into the top priority over justice. Politicians now treat basic needs as favors rather than rights. A bag of rice, a temporary cash gift or a political appointment buys loyalty and silences critics. Tribal and religious lines distract from real accountability. Education has been weakened to stifle critical thinking. Merit is sidelined while corruption and political loyalty are rewarded. Security agencies intimidate opponents instead of protecting citizens. True change begins when truth matters more than loyalty, competence more than connections, and justice more than personal gain. Only then can Nigeria break this cycle of oppression and move forward.
