US Doctor Contracts Ebola in DRC, Airlifted to Germany for Care
A US doctor working with a medical missionary group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola. The patient was transferred to Germany for specialized treatment, WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus told delegates at the World Health Assembly in Geneva. The outbreak in eastern DRC is driven by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no vaccine or approved treatment currently exists. WHO is working with health authorities in the DRC, Uganda and the US on surveillance, contact tracing and lab testing. More than 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths have been reported so far, with cases detected in cities like Kampala and Goma. Conflict and population displacement in Ituri province are complicating the response. WHO has deployed teams, supplies and funds, including an additional $3.4 million from its Contingency Fund, to support national efforts. Authorities hope risk communication, community engagement and rapid response measures will curb further spread.
